Is the Southern Poverty Law Center Jeopardizing the Lives of FRC Employees?
I was stunned today to receive an e-mail from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) that touted this title: “The anti-LGBT hate group Family Research Council (FRC) is planning to announce legislation today pushing for the repeal of the amendment to the U.S. tax code that prohibits certain nonprofits and churches from weighing in on elections.”
We know the SPLC’s labeling of individuals and groups can have deadly consequences. In 2012, its labeling of FRC as a hate group inspired a gay activist named Floyd Lee Corkins to attack FRC’s Washington headquarters and nearly kill a security guard. The guard, who was wounded in the attack, prevented him from getting beyond the lobby. Corkins was sentenced to 25-years in prison.
Corkins pleaded guilty to the following three charges:
Interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition,
Assault with intent to kill while armed,
An act of terrorism while armed.Corkins admitted that he intended to kill as many people as possible and then smear Chick-fil-A sandwiches in the faces of his victims.”According to the plea, Corkins targeted the Family Research Council for their stance on gay rights. He said he found the FRC and others labeled as hate groups on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s website.
Not learning anything from its past mistakes, the SPLC sent out the article excerpted below:
The anti-LGBT hate group Family Research Council is planning to announce legislation today pushing for the repeal of the amendment to the U.S. tax code that prohibits certain nonprofits and churches from weighing in on elections.
The so-called “Johnson Amendment,” which evangelicals and the conservative right have targeted for years, prohibits churches and other nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) designations under federal tax code from endorsing and opposing political candidates. FRC is proposing The Free Speech Fairness Act to overturn the restrictions.
“The Free Speech Fairness Act would address the shortcomings of the Johnson Amendment which in 1954 was inserted into the tax code by Senator Lyndon Johnson without floor or Committee debate,” FRC said in a news release.
The SPLC is ONLY interested in free speech for leftists. Hopefully, its irresponsible labeling of FRC will not inspire more acts of violence against Christians and family-oriented organizations.
