Is President Obama a Christian?

Obama_cross2_page-bg_2909Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was barraged by the media when he conducted a Q and A at an event in Rochester, New Hampshire following the Republican debate held on September 16. A man, while voicing his question, claimed that Obama was not a Christian, but really was a Muslim. Trump got attacked for not immediately telling the man that Obama was indeed a Christian and was born in America.

The mainstream media has accepted that Obama is a Christian because Obama says he is a Christian. Like most things related to Obama by the mainstream media, little to no scrutiny is applied to the president’s claim, especially when such investigation could prove harmful.

There’s a saying we all have heard, “Actions speak louder than words.” Do the actions of President Obama back up the words when he states he is a Christian? Christians are told by Jesus to evaluate one who claims to be a believer based on his or her actions. His words in Mathew 7:15-21 clearly reveal this:

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. . . . 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (NIV)

What has been some of the fruit that Obama has produced while claiming to be a Christian? In his devotion to keep abortion legal, he chose to not support a bill that would protect babies who survived an abortion, thus supporting infanticide.1 The Scriptures state in Psalms 139:13, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” This verse is cited as evidence by pro-lifers that God stands against abortion. Based on this, it is difficult to believe that allowing a baby who survives an abortion and experiences a live birth to die is in harmony with Christianity.

The scripture verses of Romans 1:26 and 1 Corinthians 6:9 clearly state that the homosexual life style is not acceptable in the Christian faith. Evidently, Mr. Obama feels he does not have to adhere to these scriptures, especially when it nets a political advantage. He is quick to call the first NBA player2 who publicly comes out as gay and the same for the first NFL gay college player to be drafted,3 but one is hard pressed to find where he has called a Christian to compliment him or her on his service. If such has happened it is not well publicized.

Obama welcomes the Pope to the White House but seems to relish the opportunity to offend the esteemed leader of the Catholic Church. The guest list includes invitations to “transgender activists Mateo Williamson and Vivian Taylor, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop, Bishop Gene Robinson and Sister Simone Campbell, an activist nun who leads a group criticized by the Vatican for its silence on abortion and euthanasia.”4 This is not exactly the positive action one would expect from a Christian who is welcoming another Christian to his house. The Vatican has taken note and lodged its objection.5

President Obama would also find himself in disagreement with Jesus when it comes to the concept of the redistribution of wealth. In the Parable of the Talents recorded in Mathew 25, Jesus told the story how three people received talents of ten, five and one. Those with ten and five invested them and doubled their amount. The servant that got one talent went and buried it in fear. When the master learned the results Jesus said these words in verse 28 regarding the one who hid his one talent, “Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.” Not exactly the Obama redistribution plan.

Being a Christian carries the responsibility of not just knowing the truth but also doing the right thing. James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Mr. Obama’s actions appear to be lacking regarding his words when it comes to his faith. Maybe it’s time for the media to do some Christian fruit inspection and less Trump thumping.
