Vanderbilt Professor Dr. Carol Swain says in this opinion piece about radical Islam and the dangers she believes it poses is nothing more than an attempt on her part to raise awareness among a sleeping public. She explains, “I was trying to awaken people to something I think we all ought to be concerned about because I don’t think we want to become like Europe.”Vanderbilt Professor Dr. Carol Swain says in this opinion piece about radical Islam and the dangers she believes it poses is nothing more than an attempt on her part to raise awareness among a sleeping public. She explains, “I was trying to awaken people to something I think we all ought to be concerned about because I don’t think we want to become like Europe.” Swain, who also has a website and TV show called Be The People says the Paris terrorist attacks on the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine prompted her editorial adding, “I’ve been watching the attacks on Christians and Jews and various Muslims against Muslims happening across the world, but when the Paris attack happened it just really jolted me.” She writes the attacks illustrate that “Islam is a dangerous set of beliefs totally incompatible with Western beliefs concerning freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of association.” She says her writings aren’t meant to be offensive toward Muslims, but to protect the public from radicals who want to hurt us. She concludes by saying, “I strongly believe if it had been anything involving a liberal professor that we wouldn’t be having this discussion because it seems like free speech and academic freedom may just mostly run in one direction.”
