Will Common Sense Rule on Immigration Reform?
Well, we’re barely into this new Republican-controlled Congress, and the fun has already started. Republicans seeking to curtail President Obama’s executive action on immigration have run into another brick wall, courtesy of holier-than-thou Democrats who strongly object to any effort to thwart the president’s ill-conceived plan to grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. So, who will defend and protect the American people?
Democrats who should be joining with Republicans to oppose the president’s power grabs have instead jumped right back in lockstep behind their exalted leader, crying foul about a Republican amendment tacked onto a funding bill for homeland security. When will these shenanigans ever stop? Ironically enough, this bill is being written to deal with security issues such as those at the White House, where a few unwanted guests have jumped the fence, with one even making it inside the house (I’m only surprised Obama didn’t make up his bed and ask him to stay a while.).
Sometimes it seems like our president is more worried about who’s going to win the Super Bowl or how to knock a few strokes off his golf game than he is about doing something constructive about the tens of thousands of illegals who break the law while breaking into America by climbing fences, swimming the Rio Grande, or overstaying a visa. It’s like Obama is throwing one big frat party for the illegals and it’s an open house, come-as-you-are frolic, refreshments on the house.
The proposed amendment would prioritize deportation for illegals convicted of sex abuse and domestic violence. It also would promote the hiring of U.S. citizens for jobs ahead of those immigrants the country illegally. It also seeks to advance the interests of legal immigrants over those of illegals. This is all common sense stuff that most Americans of sound mind want and expect. Doing right, though, is an alien concept for congressional Democrats stuck in a rut of their contrarian ways, defying Republicans just because they can, like petulant children.
Hang on, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Again. Chances are we’re going to be seeing a lot more of President Obama’s obstinate use of phone and pen as he comes up against a far-less-friendly Congress. Let’s hope for the sake of the republic that we the people will soon be able to get a well-conceived response from our elected officials and the other guardians of our Democratic republic, in spite of whatever foolish roadblocks Obama and his sycophants want to put in place.
